Why Professional Photography Isn’t Optional for Your Business Website
I had another one of those conversations yesterday. The client loves everything about the website plan, then I mention professional photography and suddenly there’s this awkward silence.
“Photography? Do we really need that?”
Short answer: abso-bloody-lutely.
The Face Behind the Business
This drives me mental – so many brilliant tradespeople and service providers are hiding behind faceless websites. I get it, not everyone’s comfortable being the face of their business. But you’re missing a massive trick.
Think about it this way: if you’re an electrician, plumber, or builder, your customers are literally letting you into their homes. They want to know who’s going to turn up at their door, right?
That blurry photo from 2015 or generic stock image of someone in a hard hat doesn’t cut it. Your competitors are doing that, be different and stand out from them.
Why I Slap My Face Everywhere
You’ve probably noticed I plaster my mug all over my website and socials. There’s a reason for that (other than my devastating good looks, obviously 😉).
Anyone can learn web development. It’s not magic – it can be taught. But nobody else can be me. Nobody else can show up in an orange hoodie with the same approach I bring to every project.
That’s your unique selling point too. Your personality, your approach, your way of solving problems – that’s what sets you apart from every other business in your sector.
The Bonus Nobody Talks About
Most people don’t realise this: get one good professional photo shoot done, and you’ve just sorted your social media content for months as well. That investment has a great ROI now.
Those photos can be reused over and over again across LinkedIn, Facebook, your website, business cards, flyers – everything. It’s not just a website investment, it’s a complete marketing asset that keeps giving.
The Trust Factor
Professional photos do something powerful – they separate you from the cowboys and fly-by-night operators. When someone sees quality photos of you looking professional and confident, it immediately raises your credibility.
It’s like those glossy holiday brochures. When you’re choosing a hotel, you’re judging it entirely on those photos. Same principle applies to your business.
When It’s Non-Negotiable
I’ll be completely honest with you – I’ve actually stopped taking on clients in certain industries unless they commit to professional photography. Travel and hospitality, particularly.
If you’re running a holiday cottage, B&B, or restaurant, trying to compete with phone photos is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. It just can’t be done properly.
Finding the Right Photographer
Look, I’m not a photographer. But I work with brilliant ones, and I know what works for business websites.
For holiday lets, shepherds huts, and property-based businesses in the North East, I regularly recommend Claire Collinson Photography. Claire specialises in wedding and brand photography, and she’s brilliant at capturing those lifestyle shots that make properties look inviting. You know, the ones that make people actually want to book.
For headshots and professional brand photography, Katy Howe Photography up in North Yorkshire is excellent. She recently did some work for one of my clients and the results were spot on – professional without being stiff, personality without being daft. I’ve every intention of using her myself next year.
Both understand what businesses need from their photography. It’s not just about pretty pictures – it’s about images that work hard for your business.
What You Should Do Next
Before you make any other changes to your website, do this:
Look at your current website photos (if you have any). Ask yourself honestly: “Would I trust this person to come into my home or handle my business?”
If the answer’s anything other than “absolutely,” it’s time to invest in proper photography.
Bonus question: Look at your competitors’ photos. Are they better? Can yours be better than theirs?
The Bottom Line
Quality photography isn’t just nice to have – it’s essential. And putting your face on your website isn’t vanity, it’s smart business.
Yes, it’s an investment. But it’s one that pays for itself through increased trust, better leads, higher conversion rates, and months of social media content.
Your face, your personality, your approach – that’s what makes you different from every other business doing what you do. Stop hiding behind stock photos and show people who they’re actually working with.
